Our three new programs are:
STARS Mentoring
In Coconino County, there are close to 1,300 children with incarerated parents. Statistics show that children of incarcerated parents are 70% more likely than their peers to end up in prison.
STARS Mentoring hopes to change that statistic by asking volunteers to become a Big Brother or Big Sister to one of these children. |
Step Up Mentoring
The STEP UP Teen Mentoring Program was developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff and Coconino County Juvenile Court Services to introduce teens involved in the court system to appropriate adult mentors from the Flagstaff community.
For a young person, having a mentor who shares their time can mean a lot to them and can create positive interests that last a lifetime.
The youth in this program need all the attention, encouragement, and understanding any teen needs and they may have issues that many young people don’t have to deal with.
Some live in single parent homes, some have drug or substance issues, while some may have been abused at some point in their lives.
These teens deserve as much support and guidance as other teens, and you can be the person who can make a difference in their lives by being a positive role model to them.

Arizona GEAR Up Mentoring
This unique program assists financially disadvantaged youth in preparing to succeed in post-secondary education by increasing their academic performance and their high school graduation rate, and by increasing their understanding of postsecondary education options.
Participating youth engage in activities with the GEAR Up Group that encourage and support their completion of high school and many of them will be matched with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Currently this program is based at MESA Charter School and Leupp Middle School. |
Community Based Mentoring
This 40-year-old mentoring program serves over 300 community members in Big/Little matches each year in Flagstaff and at the Grand Canyon. Bigs serve as role models and friends to Littles by going on outings and doing activities such as hiking, visiting museums and libraries, playing basketball, going ice skating, and chatting together over ice cream. Community Based matches last an average of 2.2 years, meeting once a week for 2-4 hours.

Launched in 1998, Pipeline NAU matched 20 seventh- grade students from first generation college bound families with 20 faculty members from Northern Arizona University . The first cohort graduated from high school in June of 2003 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They started as freshman at NAU with full scholarships in the fall of 2003. As part of their appreciation of the program, every cohort one student at NAU gives back to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff by mentoring Littles of their own. The second cohort of Pipeline students is set to start at NAU in the fall of 2005. Click here for more information about this special program.
